IRSchool 2026 Projects: Bioindicator Plants on Northern Ecology

19.06.2026

Many plants in Yakutia have developed a range of physiological and biochemical adaptations that allow them to survive in harsh conditions. For example, this includes the production of essential oils, the synthesis of cold shock proteins, and changes in the expression of resistance genes.

Our project will focus on studying changes in the composition of pigments and fatty acids in potential bioindicator plants growing in the wild and near industrial facilities in Central Yakutia, in order to quickly assess the ecological state of this territory.

Project tutors: Venedikt Kudrin, a graduate of the biology and chemistry class at the Republican Lyceum. He is a methodologist at the Department of Natural Science Education at the Junior Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). He is an Olympiad coach preparing for the regional stage of the All-Russian Olympiad of Schoolchildren in biology.
Alexander Semenov successfully graduated from the Faculty of Biology at Lomonosov Moscow State University. He then successfully completed his bachelor’s degree at the Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Agricultural Academy named after K.A. Timiryazev University and a master’s degree from M.K. Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University. He is currently successfully pursuing a PhD at the Institute of Biological Problems of the Cryolithozone.
