IRSchool 2026 Projects: Geophysics and Ecology

Hello everyone!
We’re continuing our series of project reviews, and today is the next one. It’s called “Geophysical Monitoring of Yakutsk and Its Suburbs.”
Living in the city, you’re exposed to various factors that affect your health: air pollution, chemical waste, elevated noise levels, and electromagnetic fields. But there’s another important physical factor that’s rarely taken into account: air ions. A lack of negative air ions has a detrimental effect on health, but in urban areas, their actual levels are often below recommended levels. During your project, you’ll conduct multi-day geophysical monitoring to determine the air ion content in various areas of Yakutsk and the Lena River basin, as well as their changes over time. You’ll take measurements directly at the sites using scientific sensors, process the data using statistical methods, and track atmospheric conditions using specialized online resources. As a result, you’ll create a map of the air ion composition and magnetic field variations in Yakutsk and its environs.

You’ll be accompanied on this journey by two wonderful tutors. Elena Krakhina is a research engineer at the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is the winner of the international “Ecology is Everyone’s Business” award in the “Eco-Education” category. Kirill Zenin is a research engineer at the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics in Moscow, specializing in geophysics and ionospheric studies, and is also studying pedagogy at the Institute of Education.
